Ephesians 4:11-13 (ESV)
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
One of the greatest revelations that pastors can accept is that they cannot do it all. Therefore, they need active believers to assist them in proclaiming the message of Christ. With that in mind, pastors need to honor those who gather weekly with them by empowering or discipling them to do the work Jesus called each to do, "Make disciples" (Matthew 28:18-20). In order for believers to be active in following the command of Jesus, they must be empowered. It is imperative that each believer learns their gifting and how to use their gifts for the kingdom.
